Quick Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadam | Tomato Variety Rice preparation with step by step photos and a quick video. Tomato rice is a very common variety of rice recipe in south India. At many homes, Mom’s will make this one-pot recipe in no time. I have added green chilies for spice and no other masalas have been added. I prefer to make it with a very light spice. So that kids too can enjoy this one-pot recipe.

Quick Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadam | Tomato Variety Rice preparation with step by step photos and a quick video.

Ingredients
  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Small Onion -¼ th cup
  • Green chilli -4
  • Tomato - 2
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Ginger garlic- 1 tbsp minced
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Coriander leaves -1 tbsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard - ½ tsp
  • Fennel(Sombu/Saunf) - 1 tsp
Directions
  • Step 1 Take one cup of rice . Add water and soak it for 15 mins. Once it’s soaked, rinse it well and keep it aside.
  • Step 2 Heat a pressure cooker and add oil.
  • Step 3 Add mustard seeds
  • Step 4 Add fennel(Sombu/Saunf)
  • Step 5 Add curry leaves
  • Step 6 Add green chili and saute it for few minutes
  • Step 7 Add minced ginger garlic and saute it well
  • Step 8 Add small onion and saute well
  • Step 9 Add chopped tomato and saute well
  • Step 10 Add turmeric powder
  • Step 11 add salt and mix it well
  • Step 12 Add two cups of water bring to boil
  • Step 13 add soaked rice and mix it well
  • Step 14 Add coriander leaves and mix it well
  • Step 15 Cover the lid and pressure cook in medium flame for 3 whistles
  • Step 16 Give a quick stir.
  • Step 17 You can serve it with vadams or poriyal / varuval according to your taste.

Making of Quick Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadam | Tomato Variety Rice :

 

Take one cup of rice. Add water and soak it for 15 mins. Once it’s soaked, rinse it well and keep it aside.

 

1.  Heat a pressure cooker and add oil.

2. Add mustard seeds

3. Add fennel(Sombu/Saunf)

4. Add curry leaves

5. Add green chili and saute it for few minutes

6. Add minced ginger-garlic and saute it well

7. Add small onion and saute well

8. Add chopped tomato and saute well

9. Add turmeric powder

10. Add salt and mix it well. Cook it for 2 mins until tomato becomes soft and mushy

11. Add two cups of water and bring to boil

12. Add soaked rice and mix it well

13. Add coriander leaves and mix it well

14. Cover the lid and pressure cook in medium flame for 3 whistles

15. Give a quick stir. You can serve it with vadams or poriyal / varuval according to your taste.
